A cheaply animated Jewish Christmas Carol, Eight Crazy Nights refers to the period of Chanukah. During this time, alcoholic no-goodnik Davey Stone is shown how to be a better person by basketball coach Whitey and his sister Eleanore (all three voiced by Adam Sandler). Comedy songs and toilet humour abound, but it's neither sly enough for adults nor clean enough for kids. It seems Sandler's determined to prove that Punch-Drunk Love was a freak blip rather than a career upturn. Expect The Waterboy 2 next.
DVD Extras:
Big package, poor performance. The two commentaries both rile, Sandler's jokey effort trying to make up for the drone of the tech team, while the HBO First Look doc is bland, bland, bland. There are also sketches in lieu of deleted scenes, a music vid and a so-so short about Sandler's bulldog, Meatball. Ho-hum.
