A tale of illicit love, money-laundering and backstreet abortionists starring Gael García Bernal (Amores Perros) as a priest whose loins get the better of him. Is it any surprise the Catholic Church threatened the cast with excommunication? It's not, however, as steamy as you might expect; nor is it interesting enough to deserve its Best Foreign Film nom at this year's Oscars. That said, it's a cogent piece that works as both a rites-of-passage drama and an exposé of the hypocrisy of the Church.
