John Carpenter's respectable if controversy-free telemovie...

Two years after Elvis checked out, John Carpenter made this respectable if controversy-free telemovie. Nailing the lip curl and pelvis grind perfectly, Kurt Russell takes Elvis from dodging bullies in his schooldays to the eve of his ’69 Vegas comeback.

The only thing he can’t get is the singing voice; Elvis impersonator Ronnie McDowell recorded 36 covers for the movie – and returns to give the disc a starless yak-track. Still, this is the three-hour cut, not the original UK cinema edit.
