Space fighter pilot Willis Davidge (Dennis Quaid) crashlands on a planet as desolate as the Elephant Man's little black book. His only companion is the reptilian Jerry (Louis Gossett Jr), a hostile alien. Gradually, the two form a friendship.
DVD Extras:
Trailer, behind-the-scenes photographs - an extended scene with a German soundtrack, anyone?
Verdict:
An ambitious 1985 space oddity from director Wolfgang Petersen that never quite comes off. The pre-CGI special effects occasionally veer towards '60s Trek-style naff, and Maurice Jarre's synthesiser soundtrack makes John Carpenter's musical noodling seem subtle. However, this is at least an attempt to create some kind of character-driven alternative to Star Wars bombast.
