David Cronenberg returns to body-horror-dealing form with this doomy tale of virtual reality computer games, although he includes a healthy streak of dark humour and a teensy touch of self-parody.

DVD Extras:

Frame By Frame: The Invisible Art Of Carol Spiers documentary, director's commentary, cinematographer's commentary, visual and special effects supervisor's commentary, Sega Dreamcast interactive menu (includes internet hyperlink). Heading up an impressive clutch of special features is a 53-minute documentary which focuses on production designer Carol Spiers, looking at her career and then focusing on the nitty gritty of her job during the shoot for eXistenZ. A refreshing change from the usual spotlight-on-location-approach, this offers a good insight into how they established the look of this twisted little thriller.
