Exodus

4

Penny Woolcock’s Margate-shot Bible-story remix straddles the dystopia of Children Of Men, the political wallop of Ghosts and her own punchy Brit-flick The Principles Of Lust. Here, the Promised Land struggles under Pharaoh Mann’s fascist rule and the dispossessed are dumped in a guarded enclosure, where resentment breeds violence and Pharaoh’s son Moses leads a movement of the people. Woolcock’s rough’n’ready style lends the tale a grubby-epic beauty. She over-reaches slightly, but for sheer daring this deserves a proper audience.
