Exorcist II: The Heretic

2

Set four years after William Friedkin's vomit-spewing, head-twisting original, John Boorman's yawnathon ditches the jolts in favour of metaphysical mumblings. At its blackened heart is Regan (Linda Blair, again), who's suffering horrific nightmares. Who you gonna call? That would be Richard Burton's hammy - - sorry, heretical - - priest, Father Lamont.

Reviled by critics, loathed by fans, Exorcist II is so forgettable that William Peter Blatty did just that when he made the third instalment as a sequel to the first. Gets an extra star for its pyrotechnic finale - - but only just.

DVD Extras:

Trailer, cast and crew list as well as an alternative opening that recaps the original's action in a voiceover. Boorman's movie exists in several versions, so a little more additional footage wouldn't have gone amiss.
