Actually not that bad in fits and starts, Renny Harlin's banged-out replacement for Paul Schrader's aborted first stab isn't quite the blasphemy most described on theatrical release. Its problems are legion: principally, a rushed script, some dreadful CGI and a level of gore at total odds with the original's eerie build. However, when he's not messing about with cartoon hyenas, Harlin delivers a couple of neat shocks and a moody backstory. Stellan Skarsgård, meanwhile, who must at second time of asking have felt trapped in B-movie hell, delivers a performance of stoic smarts.
