A critically well-received, award-winning hit in its native Italy, Facing Window is undone by its small screen premiere. Here, with Andrea Guerra's powerfully lush score minimised, the Hitchcockian references less remarkable and all plot twists revealed, Ferzan Ozpetek's era-spanning love story seems at best overly busy and at worst slightly contrived. The movie's cross-cutting structure is love or hate, but it's little saccharine touches - - ""You must demand to live in a better world, not just dream about it!"" - - make it all feel a bit, well, twee.
