There's no escaping it: David Fincher's blistering expectation-shatterer really does look even better on second viewing. An insanely complex satiric belt in the gut to men's groups, macho values and global nihilism? A visceral thriller with a big bang ending? Comic homoerotic bonding for beginners? All this and more. As sharp and dangerous as a broken bottle, Fight Club will be gouging gleeful lumps out of complacent viewers for years to come.
DVD Extras:
Commentary featuring David Fincher, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter, behind-the-scenes vignettes (with multi-angle function), six deleted scenes, Edward Norton's "Yale interview", trailers, TV and internet spots, Dust Brothers music video, art gallery, original artwork and storyboards, Norton and Pitt's "public service announcements". From its Fincher-designed brown paper wrapping to its edgy animated menus, this two-disc package bellows attention to detail. The audio commentary (Pitt, Fincher and Norton cracking gags and reminiscing as they pick up on the various subliminal images, plot pointers and in-jokes) is one of the most entertaining around. Meanwhile, the deleted scenes offer a genuine insight into Fincher's working practices and the behind-the-scenes featurettes offer the best use of the oft-ignored multi-angle function yet (click from set-up to set-up, or flick between alternate opening credit fonts and tunes). This is Jack's smirking triumph...
