Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

2

Earth has been devastated by invincible spirits. Mankind will only survive if Dr Aki Ross (voiced by Ming Na) and a ragtag platoon lead by Captain Gray Edwards (Alec Baldwin) can gather together eight `spirits' and save the planet... Utter nonsense? Umm, yes. The makers of this CG extravaganza were clearly more interested in making their heroine a cyber fantasy than wasting their time on little things like plot and character development.

DVD Extras:

Two commentaries, isolated score with composer's commentary, Board/Blasts feature, The Gray Project documentary, alternative intro, blooper reel, music video spoof, character files, scene editing facility, Aki's photo shoot, trailer and film exploration, DVD-ROM features including screenplay and virtual tour of Square Pictures. You may not be able to polish a cyber-turd but this outstanding package gives it a damn good go. The Board/Blast facility, which plays the film as a work in progress, is a fantastic concept, while the documentary and numerous commentaries, though somewhat dry, are staggeringly comprehensive. But wait, there's more. Isolate the score in the action scenes and it plays like the James Cameron segment of Fantasia, while some much needed humour is injected courtesy of the blooper reel and `Thriller' short. And yes, we are talking CG characters doing their Michael Jackson thang.
