Five Children And It

2

Eddie Izzard maintains his remarkable track record of ill-conceived stinkers (Circus, The Avengers) with another bland turkey - though at least he has the decency to stay off screen as the voice of the animatronic `Sand Fairy' who grants magical wishes to the young evacuee heroes of E Nesbit's family favourite. He's still pretty unbearable and the same goes for just about everything else in John Stephenson's winsome wartime fantasy. Okay, so the production design looks good and the guys at Jim Henson's Creature Shop earn their salary. But it does rather say something when Kenneth Branagh's dotty eccentric is the only reason to keep watching.
