Five Days

4

With DI Tennison retired, Cracker off in Oz and Life On Mars long gone, we need new blood in Copland UK. Five Days is an admirable attempt to marry US quality control to British budgets, with Janet McTeer and Hugh Bonneville running the incident room when a young mum and her kids go missing. The five days in question are non-consecutive key periods in what becomes a long-running investigation; without giving too much away, the nature of the crime alters episode to episode, as do the relationships between those most affected by it: the clue-sifting officers, the missing woman’s husband (Spooks’ David Oyelowo) and her mother (Penelope Wilton). The conclusion is perhaps the bravest decision of all: less the twist we’ve all come to anticipate than a sadly banal tragedy.
