Cheesy 1980 update of the `30s comic strip, as Flash Gordon (Sam J Jones) and his soon-to-be girlfriend Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) are kidnapped by potty Doctor Hans Zarkov (Topol) and taken to the planet Mongo. There, they must battle the evil Emperor Ming (Max von Sydow) in a world where Queen are the only band on the jukebox. Bizarrely, it was directed by Get Carter helmer Mike Hodges.

Trailer, photo gallery. A silly Star Wars cash-in that doesn't get any better with age, Flash Gordon is redeemed fractionally by letting us watch ex-Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan go through his paces as `Young Treeman'. The disc's extras are non-existent, but maybe that's a blessing.
