“It’s corny, but it’s kind of true, you know?” says director Adrian Lyne of his ludicrous but irresistible MTV-age hoofer. He’s right. There’s heart as well as lashings of sweaty lady flesh in this Rocky for girls. Jennifer Beals stars as a young welder-cum-stripper who yearns to be a ‘proper’ dancer. The sweetness is in marked contrast to co-scribe Joe Eszterhas’ similar, nastier Showgirls, but it’s the electrifying body-doubled dance numbers that really stick.
