Paul Verhoeven didn’t appear out of thin air to make RoboCop – he’d already made his name with a series of flicks in his native Holland, this bonkers international co-production marking his English-language debut some two years before the original silver cyborg.
Tricky to categorise, it’s certainly something, applying Verhoeven’s trademark lurid/ brutally frank eye to a story of battling medieval mercenaries.
Rutger Hauer is fun in the lead, and if you’re not at least curious to watch a film where Jennifer Jason Leigh looks for plants fertilised by the semen of hanged men, well, there’s just no helping you.
