A lesson in low-budget filmmaking, Christopher Nolan's 1998 debut makes a virtue of its limitations. Economical lighting and handheld black-and-white photography match the murky content and time-hopping structure of this intriguing London-set noir.
The links with Memento are clear but this is more than a blueprint for a modern classic. Alex Haw is an unnerving guide for Jeremy Theobald's lonely would-be writer, inducting him into a grifter's netherworld where nothing is quite what it seems.
DVD Extras:
On these shores, Following boasts only the good-but-no-cigar extras which graced the Region One release. These are excellent for wannabe auteurs, if a little hard-going for everyone else. The option to read the shooting script while you watch is only for the dedicated, while Nolan's commentary is detailed but dry. There's also the chance to watch the movie in chronological order - which redefines pointless.
