Four Minutes

4

In a German women’s jail, an elderly piano teacher takes on a new pupil – a violently disturbed teenager convicted of murder. A predictable plot trajectory, you might think: anti-social impulses tamed by high culture. But writer/director Chris Kraus has something tougher in mind, and far less simplistic in outcome. Via an intricate pattern of flashbacks, flash-forwards and subjective sound, he explores a complex of ideas. As the two women, Monica Bleibtreu and Hannah Herzsprung perform poignant psychological duets. Extras comprise some brief interviews.
