Less yer world-saving battle against evil megalomaniacs and more of a Cold War escapade (007 smuggles a Russian decoding device - - and a Soviet babe - - across the Iron Curtain). Hard and slick, it's a teasing glimpse of the the series' possible future before Goldfinger nailed down the format that launched a thousand quips.
DVD Extras:
Behind-the-scenes documentary, Harry Saltzman: Showman doc, audio commentary with director Terence Young and cast members, tons of theatrical trailers and TV/radio ads, stills gallery, making-of booklet. From its snazzy menu screens to the archive of background materials, this oozes effort. Bearing that in mind, you can forgive the odd Walther PPK shot to the foot (eg Lois Maxwell burbling on in the audio commentary about her vaudeville days while, onscreen, Desmond Llewelyn is making his first appearance as Q).
