Every year an unknown/under-appreciated actress fights it out with the glitterati for Oscar, and this year it was Frozen River’s Melissa Leo.
She convinces as Ray Eddy, a trailer-park mom who teams up with Native American Lila (Misty Upham) to smuggle immigrants over the US-Quebec border.
Authentically depicting poverty, estrangement and desperation, this low-key debut is always absorbing, rarely riveting.
