The second outing for Harry Palmer (Michael Caine) sees him dispatched to Berlin to see if a high-ranking Russian really is about to defect. Soon up to his NHS specs in deceit and counter-deceit, Palmer needs every ounce of his down-at-heel charm and determination to a) sort out the truth; and b) get his arse safely out of there. It's not Caine's best Palmer performance - - that nod goes to debut appearance The Ipcress File - - but it still manages to satisfy. So if you prefer a dirtier spirit with a little more kick than a pristine 007 vodka martini, you can't really go wrong with this one.
