Garfield: Special Edition

2

Catcalls greeted Garfield in cinemas, but enough tots clamoured to see the cartoon moggy's big-screen debut to make it one of the year's biggest sleeper hits. Quite why is anyone's guess, Peter Hewitt's lacklustre romp failing to capture any of the charm and dry wit that made the original comic-strip so popular. Bill Murray sounds bored as the lasagne-eating feline, while the CG puss looks so naff you'll wish you had cataracts.

DVD Extras:

The first disc, available separately for £15.99, has a producer/director commentary, a short doc on the computer effects and a couple of games for the kids. There's also a nifty look at Garfield creator Jim Davis at work and - - a real treat this - - Oscar-nominated Ice Age short Gone Nutty. The second disc adds three featurettes, none of which justify the £9 price hike.
