George Stevens 100th Anniversary Collection

3

At just two features and two documentaries, this collection honouring director George Stevens's five Hollywood decades feels more like a repackaging gambit than a definitive tribute. Sparky 1942 Tracy/Hepburn comedy Woman Of The Year and 1956 James Dean-driven Texas epic Giant are standouts, but no more so than the absent Shane or A Place In The Sun. Happily, George Stevens Jr's award-winning George Stevens: A Filmmaker's Journey is a solid career-retrospective anchor as well as a standout display of filial piety. Solid 45-minute doc George Stevens: D-Day To Berlin lovingly collates Stevens's frequently horrifying wartime colour footage from Paris to Dachau, but substantially overlaps Journey.
