Get Shorty

4

Made when John Travolta was on his post-Pulp Fiction comeback, Get Shorty tears a leaf out of some authentic pulp fiction by returning to QT's inspiration, crime writer Elmore Leonard. Effortlessly adapting the tale of hardboiled hoods and long cons, Barry Sonnenfeld's badda-bing fling sticks mob movie buff Chili Palmer (Travolta) in Tinseltown, and then proceeds to gnaw the hand that feeds it. According to legend, the plot's loosely based on Leonard's own experiences of being shafted by Hollywood, yet Sonnenfeld keeps the tone as light as a soufflé.

DVD Extras:

No con here as this two-disc Special Edition delivers the goods. Disc One has a workmanlike chat-track from Sonnenfeld, but it's Disc Two that makes this really special. Before looking at the Making Of featurette and blooper reel of candid camera moments, start with the Page To Screen doc, where screenwriter Scott Frank recalls asking grouchy seventysomething Leonard what the novel's theme is ("Theme? There is no theme!"). If you Get Shorty, chances are you'll want to get this too.
