Ghost World

4

School's out forever and petulant flunkers Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) and Enid (Thora Birch) have a precise sense of their own nerdy cool and a cliquey, juvenile worldview. A prank reply to a personal ad leads them to the so-hopeless-he's-hip Steve Buscemi, a middle-aged blues anorak who Enid adopts to destructive effect. A sour-faced Velma dripping acid, Birch is fearless as the twilight teen in director Terry Zwigoff's brightly-lit Lynchian suburbia. There's a melancholic edge to this character study as its characters grip onto secular passions in the misguided belief that they'll deliver spiritual contentment.
