Long before she became St. Angelina, La Jolie starred in this HBO telemovie about the rise and fall of ’80s fashion model Gia Carangi. It’s tempting to read shades of Jolie’s own early, unhinged life into the surly supermodel-rebel who tore through women, men and heroin before dying of AIDS. Like many cautionary tales – and this one transcends predictability more than most – it mixes glamour and hedonism with scenes of addiction and withdrawal. Gia was a train-wreck waiting to happen, but it’s Jolie’s fierce performance that makes this a dead-end trip worth taking. No extras.
