Gimme The Loot

4

A unexpectedly enjoyable urban character-piece

As old-school as a vintage Spike Lee joint, Adam Leon’s micro-brew of a movie follows two Bronx teens Malcolm (Ty Hickson) and Sofia (Tashiana Washington) as they hustle across New York in a plan to infuriate a rival graffiti crew.

The plot, set across two days, is secondary to Leon’s quest to turn in a laidback character study, as these two kids take in a city belonging to others – which hits home when Malcolm meets a well-to-do Village-dwelling college girl.

Full of ear-pleasing lines and obscure R&B tunes, it’s colourful, casual and full of flavour. An unexpected treat.
