In among all those Ryans and Zulus and Longest Days lies the largely overlooked Glory, Ed Zwick's based-on-fact historical war movie, which easily deserves to be counted among the classics. Matthew Broderick stars as Colonel Robert G Shaw, a young Yankee officer charged with leading the Civil War's first all-black regiment. Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and Andre Braugher fill the ranks as his passionate men, offering a clutch of undeniably moving performances, while the battle scenes are easily as harrowing as anything Spielberg ever chucked at the screen.

DVD Extras:

The True Story Of Glory Continues documentary, Glory: The Making Of History featurette, Voices Of Glory feature, deleted scenes, director's commentary, isolated score, filmographies, theatrical trailer, trailers for The Bone Collector and Devil In A Blue Dress. It's good to see that, even though the film doesn't receive the attention it deserves, this disc transfer certainly has. Anyone interested in the story which inspired the movie will appreciate the 50-minute True Story Of Glory doc, in which Morgan Freeman narrates an account of the all-black regiment, and deals with the issue of black soldiers' involvement in the Civil War. The more usual Making Of material is covered in two further featurettes, while a couple of deleted scenes (minus score and sound effects) round off a well-decorated war hero of a DVD.
