Chris Rock’s documentary on the vast amounts of time and money black women invest in hair weaves and chemical relaxers doesn’t want for laughs, stars (Ice-T, Salt-N-Pepa and Maya Angelou all offer up their own singularly individual views) or attitude.
But its agile, non-judgemental style means that any of the serious political points (“If your hair is relaxed, white people are relaxed”) get lost in the shuffle.
Still, the well-coiffed Rev Al Sharpton manages to get in some sharp digs at tonsorial oppression. Rock’s chat-track is a cut above the norm.
