Biopic of Dian Fossey, who spent 20 years in the African jungle studying gorillas only to be murdered, probably by poachers, in 1986. Admired on its initial release, Michael Apted's movie now seems overly worthy, although it deserves a look for Sigourney Weaver's bold performance and the seamless blend between John Seale's wildlife photography and Rick Baker's creature effects. But it's the racism that leaves a bitter taste: excluding Fossey's loyal tracker, all Africans are portrayed as brutal and corrupt.
