An uncharacteristically shallow musical effort from the Spanish film master

A visual poet of incredible potency, Belle De Jour director Luis Buñuel crafted a body of stunning films thrumming with sexual fervour and social outrage.

Alas, neither quality’s in evidence in this Mexican musical about moustachioed prospectors arguing over oil. “A commercial effort without any great artistic ambition,” as the mini-featurette attests, it’s stilted and stiff; an awkward footnote in the evolution of a grandmaster.
