Aside from its bizarre gourmet finale, this belated sequel was a major disappointment, transforming the scariest character of the '90s into a chubby and likeable psycho-dandy. Though beautifully shot, its haphazard plot has no central thread and no driving interest. Jodie Foster was right to pass.
DVD Extras:
Director's commentary, 75 minutes of featurettes, 34 minutes of deleted scenes, multi-angle fish market shoot-out, storyboard gallery with interview, multi-angle title sequence with commentaries, trailers, TV spots, exhaustive photo and poster gallery. There may be tons of extras on this two-disc set, but none are particularly outstanding. The Making Of featurettes are worthwhile but padded, while Ridley Scott's commentary is rather dull, lacking any real insight. Deleted scenes, meanwhile, include a slightly more sinister alternate ending, and a magic moment where Hannibal breaks into Clarice's car and licks her steering wheel.
