Happily N'Ever After

2

Fractured fairytales are 10 a penny these days – and this sterile Shrek-alike is cheaper than most. And that’s despite a bankable voice cast including Sigourney Weaver as an evil step-mom who decides to screw with the endings of classic yarns. Sadly, the filmmakers’ own ideas of subversion only go as far as giving heroine Cinders (Sarah Michelle Gellar) a chic pixie haircut. The biggest irony is how formulaic it all is: smug self-referencing, ‘streetwise’ sidekicks, rote romantic fade-out… Pretty, but lacking substance.
