Before everyone got his message with In The Mood For Love, Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai made this weepy paean to themes of separation, exile and starting anew.
When two gay men (Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung) have a bust-up, they visit Buenos Aires in an attempt to boost their affair. After yet another falling out, they find themselves stranded and penniless on the wrong side of the world. Wong captures their loneliness in scenes of magnificent, moody languor, set to a melancholy score, before a dazzling rush of aconclusion brings it all back home. Lush as you like, it seeps into your soul.
