Havoc

2

Hello (home)boys: Anne Hathaway goes wild in this throwback to ’50s kids-gone-bad flicks. The one-time Mouse House star trashes her apple pie image as Allison, a coke-snorting, booty-shaking wigga who drives her daddy’s Merc down to East LA to hang with the Latino homeboys and falls for gangbanger Hector (Freddy Rodriguez). It’s not exactly Romeo and Juliet, more a wake-up call for rich girls who think ghetto style’s a lifestyle choice, as beatings and gang-rapes teach this OC reject the realities of slumming it. Screenwriter Stephen Gaghan’s been down this road before (remember daddy’s little girl turned dirty crack ’ho Erika Christensen in Traffic?), but this time he’s got less to say. Still, scratch beneath the semi-ludicrous street strut and the “Parents, do you know where your kids are?” sensationalism and there’s a sly dig at Amex-carrying whites who think they’re down with gangsta style.
