Heat And Dust

3

Greta Scacchi scored her breakthrough role in this 1982 Merchant-Ivory effort, re-released as part of a 20-strong M&I collection. Playing a newlywed colonial whose behaviour creates a rumpus in '20s Raj, her demure sex appeal supplies the heat. The dust comes from James Ivory's direction, which is too dry and genteel to conjure any real passion.

Shame, especially as Scacchi's performance runs parallel with an equally compelling turn from Julie Christie as the heroine's great-niece, who's seeking the truth behind the scandal in modern-day India.
