Hellboy Animated: Blood & Iron

3

Following Sword Of Storms, ol’ hornhead gets cartoony again in this action frightener, pitting his Right Hand of Doom against ghosts, werewolves and a lady vampire who’s back from the dead. However you slice it, the Animated series serves merely as a stopgap for the live-action Hellboy 2, due summer ’08. Blood & Iron’s visuals are patchy in places, while the story shuffles until it’s finally time for the Big H to start kicking demon-tail.

DVD Extras:

A fair amount of care’s gone into the extras, however. There’s a peppy yak-track from helmer Tad Stones and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, a short but substantial Making Of and the chance to see flashbacks from the main feature in chronological order. Featurette Iron Shoes, meanwhile, offers funky test shots for a English-folklore yarn featuring vocals from Simpsons man Dan Castellaneta. Pick of the disc, though, is e-comic The Penanggalan, penned by Mignola himself.
