"When you know of something good, you want to tell the world about it... and, if possible, poke your dick into it!" So said Guillermo Del Toro at the San Diego Comic Con back in 2002, in an interview that's just one of a batch of healthy extras on this three-disc beast.
That's exactly what Hellboy is - a film that, with a whole lot of heart, stands proud as one of the most faithful comic-book offerings of the last few years. It is, in essence, a technicolor love affair between Del Toro and creator Mike Mignola's big red guy - not enough razzle-dazzle for some, but a fan boy pleaser nonetheless.
Del Toro regular Ron Perlman dons the Right Hand Of Doom as the boy from Down Under - rattling off quips with plenty of bite and laying the smackdown on the netherworld's minions. Support players Selma Blair and Rupert Evans, thanks to this Director's Cut, are given more room to flourish alongside John Hurt, who pops up as Hellboy's dad, along with man-fish Abe Sapien (Doug Jones).

This Special Edition extravaganza is what DVD was made for: features from the previous releases are whacked on, together with a third disc loaded with a ton of other behind-the-scenes info. Best in show is the mammoth two-hour Seeds Of Creation documentary charting the production from inception to premiere. A pity, then, that it's been available on Region One for well over a year now...
