High Plains Drifter

4

The now-staid Clint Eastwood directorial railroad wouldn't dream of making a stop in wild territory like this anymore. It's an unsettling and sadistic film, thrashing out Western staples with almost parodic glee as Eastwood's iconic loner rides into the town of Lago and agrees to rid them of their little problem in return for anything he wants. At times offensive, with some truly dubious sexual violence, High Plains Drifter thrives on the itchy ambiguity of whether the stranger is a man, revenge incarnate or, as someone suggests, the Devil himself.
