Hijack Stories

4

Oliver Schmitz's sly sideswipe at South African society scores points both as a revealing portrait of ghetto life and as a hefty dig at rich liberals whose concern for the impoverished hides hypocrisy and fear.

A struggling actor researching for a role as a township gangsta heads into the ghettos and hooks up with a bunch of small-time teen thieves and thugs. But the closer he gets to them, the further he drifts from his safe suburban life...

Violent in places, palm-sweatingly tense in others, Hijack Stories is nonetheless shot through with a thick vein of black humour. That and a complete lack of condescension round off a refreshing morality tale.
