Disney's adaptation of Louis Sachar's acclaimed kids' novel struggles to compress a complex storyline and under-serves the book's dark, idiosyncratic magic realism. Fighting a family curse and a frame-up for celebrity shoe-stealing, teen Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) ends up in juvenile boot camp in the Texas desert. Here he digs endless holes for the warden (Sigourney Weaver) and her sidekick (a scenery-chewing Jon Voight) before heroically rescuing a pint-sized pal.
