The moral message dulls the impact of this drug mule thriller

Holy Rollers review

The true story of how orthodox Jews were used as drug mules to sneak happy pills into the US should really make for a more compelling drama than this.

The problem lies in director Kevin Asch’s reluctance to play up his yarn’s thriller elements, focusing instead on Jesse Eisenberg’s progression from devout Hasid to international smuggler of religious ecstasy.

This is essentially a rite of passage then, with rabbi-in-waiting Jason Fuchs as Jesse’s good angel, Justin Bartha’s seductive reprobate as the bad, and a moralistic tone that makes it feel like a sermon.
