If you consider Five’s shoddy Noddy cartoons to be the apex of modern CGI, look no further for your favourite new family film. The obviously low-budget Hoodwinked borrows the Rashômon blueprint (same story, different perspectives) for a cheaply rendered, sassy tale starring sundry out-of-copyright fairytale characters.
Young Red (voiced by Anne Hathaway), all embroidered bell-bottoms, attitude and scarlet hoodie, her Granny (Glenn Close) and a wolf are the main suspects in a spate of recipe thefts. They and the local law enforcers – a disco-loving frog and three little pigs – trade would-be screwball asides, few of which are either witty or likely to make sense to tweens.
DVD Extras:
Extras comprise an affectionate commentary, from co-writers/directors Cory and Todd Edwards and Tony Leech, which acknowledges the big influence Chevy Chase’s Fletch had on the movie. There’s also a Making Of. It’s impressive, but only because it manages to avoid mentioning Shrek.
