Human flaws drive the inexorable engine of tragedy in first-time director Vadim Perelman's brooding, atmospheric adaptation of Andre Dubus III's novel.
When a tax error costs recovering alcoholic Kathy (Jennifer Connelly) her fog-swathed beach home, exiled Iranian colonel Behrani (Ben Kingsley, all flashing eyes and ramrod spine) buys it at auction. The ensuing battle of wills is underpinned by deadly sins - pride, wrath and the lust of a married policeman whose attempts to help Kathy lead to disaster - resulting in a dark film full of pity and compassion.
DVD Extras:
