Howards End

4

Merchant Ivory's multi-Oscared EM Forster adaptation has to be its best film to date, a ravishingly realised period drama about two very different Edwardian families whose lives become entwined with bittersweet consequences.

DVD Extras:

30th Anniversary Merchant Ivory promo, Howards End featurette, interviews with cast and crew, behind-the-scenes footage, original trailer, Widescreen, English (Dolby Digital 5.1) language track.. From the packaging to the disc itself, everything here shouts quality. Every beautifully composed shot has been reproduced in vivid detail, vastly improving on Encore's mediocre Laserdisc of a few years ago. While it's true that some of the extras have been hastily hacked together, they still offer useful insights about the production, the story and the film-makers' intentions. Top-drawer stuff.
