I Am Camera

Cabaret's more light-hearted sister

I Am Camera review

Cabaret may be the more famous version, but this adap of Christopher Isherwood’s Goodbye To Berlin is a jauntier counterpoint to Bob Fosse’s dark burlesque.

Slated by the League Of Decency at the time, presumably for showing too much ankle, it’s delightfully racy in its chronicle of the relationship between Isherwood (Laurence Harvey) and self-obsessed gadfly Sally Bowles (Julie Harris) in pre-war Berlin.

It can only attempt sly hints at Isherwood’s homosexuality (“he’s a confirmed bachelor...”) but it’s infectiously effervescent all the same.
