Teen romcom with a cast low in likeability

School geek pulls hottie (Hayden Panettiere playing – guess what? – a cheerleader) in a movie that evokes John Hughes but lacks his warmth and wit.

‘Gay’ best mate Jack Carpenter’s a dude but leading man Paul Rust has little of Anthony Michael Hall’s likeability.
