Spaceship life in 2163

Jindrich Polák’s sci-fi odyssey predates Star Trek (in its utopian vision of space exploration) and Solaris (in its taste for philosophy over fight scenes).

Yet Polák strikes a unique tone: this is surely the only movie spaceship featuring on-board piano lessons and a dance party.

It’s visually audacious, with plenty to savour in impressive tracking shots of the very ’60s sets, but it throws up more threads than it can resolve in the brisk running time, making it feel like the start of something bigger.

Franchise, anyone?
