I'm Not Scared

3

Set in southern Italy in the summer of 1978, this child's-eye thriller takes the perspective of 10-year-old Michele (Giuseppe Cristiano), who discovers his parents are behind the kidnapping and ransom of a kid from a wealthy Milanese family. Easy to see why this dark fairytale was snapped up by Miramax, given its adorable young protagonist and sumptuous widescreen photography of rolling golden cornfields. Director Gabriele Salvatores structures the coming-of-age drama around a series of contrasts - - light and dark, above and below, joy and sadness, beauty and evil. Yet in charting Michele's loss of innocence, I'm Not Scared is only partly successful: the adult characters are sketchily drawn, the pacing uneven and the melodramatic resolution's overblown symbolism more jarring than persuasive.
