In America

4

Jim Sheridan rummages through his own memories to present this semi-autobiographical account of an Irish family relocating to New York. Part tragedy, part comedy, all heartfelt nostalgia, it's deftly told and hugely affecting.

Paddy Considine and Samantha Morton bring quality Brit thesping power to the leads, while the family's two young daughters are cute without edging into annoying. Only the odd slip into mystical schmaltz threatens to stick in the craw, but you'll even swallow that given the wide-eyed wonder of it all.
